Tevin Campbell stands tall as a child star whose star still shines as an adult. The five-time Grammy nominee was performing professionally at 12 years-old.
The Waxahachie, TX native has made his mark as a singer, songwriter, and actor. His diverse talent has brought him acclaim in film and television. He made his film debut in “Graffiti Bridge” and later appeared in sitcoms “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “Moesha.” He was on Broadway for five years as “Seaweed” in the hit show “Hairspray.”
Campbell’s music still takes center stage, demonstrated recently with the widely acclaimed and popular “Can We Talk Challenge.” He has worked with an A-list of songwriters and producers throughout his career, among them Quincy Jones, Prince, Narada Michael Walden, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Ye (formerly Sean “Puffy” Combs), Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Stevie J. and Wyclef Jean.
Benny Medina signed Campbell to Warner Bros. in 1989. Benny introduced him to music icon Jones and the rest is history. The world first heard Campbell singing “Tomorrow (A Better You, A Better Me), on Jones’ Grammy award-winning LP “Back on the Block.” Campbell landed in Billboard’s Top 10 with the Prince produced “Round and Round” from the “Graffiti Bridge” soundtrack. He then went on to record his double-platinum debut album T.E.V.I.N.
Campbell’s most popular hits would not come until 1993 when he teamed up with Babyface, Prince and Walden to record his second album “I’m Ready.” This album saw a lot of Billboard Top 100 activity, delivering the hits “I’m Ready,” “Can We Talk” and “Always in My Heart.” His third album “Back to The World” featured producers Combs and Wyclef. Campbell can be heard on numerous outside works such as “Handel’s Messiah” (A Soulful Celebration), “The Songs of West Side Story,” and ” A Very Special Christmas 2″ to name a few. He was “Powerline” in Disney’s “A Goofy Movie.”
Yes, Campbell is still standing tall and still asking “Can We Talk?” The answer is an overwhelming Yes!
